A Ventura plumber has admitted to scamming the system. Gerald Rous, proprietor of Jerry Rous Plumbing pleaded guilty to orchestrating a workers’ compensation insurance fraud last week, according to the District Attorney’s Office of Ventura County. The conviction came down on January 10, reflecting a felony charge against the business owner.
The D.A.’s investigation unearthed Rous’s deceptions claiming that he operated without any help, which allowed him to dodge paying insurance premiums. Because of these lies, his actual workers were left hanging without appropriate insurance coverage. Rous’s scheme was laid bare after an inquiry by authorities, culminating in his recent admission of guilt.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Anne Spillner, who handled the prosecution as part of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fraud Unit, emphasized the gravity of such crimes. “Workers’ compensation insurance exists to protect the health and recovery of vulnerable injured workers in our county,” Spillner said. She further noted that these kinds of fraudulent activities don’t just harm employees, they create an unfair market where honest players are at a disadvantage.
Moreover, employees injured on the job without proper coverage are often denied the care they need due to these kinds of illicit acts. Rous now faces the music with his sentencing scheduled for February 13, in the Ventura County Superior Court.
